Here's what the internet means: a distributed reputation system. You make a good website, I give you a like, then people who follow me can see your website in their recommendations and search results. So everything you see flows directly from your carefully chosen root of trust. Also spammers and bots would be irrelevant as long as nobody follows them.
The real problem came when people coined "gatekeeping" and anyone who criticized anything was shamed as "le smug redditor who thinks he's better than everyone else". Elitism was always a necessary part of society. So let's make it explicit.
