The assumption in this design was likely "dynamically load subtrees", but its exponentially more expensive with bandwidth/time to store each reply in separate subtree instead of one thread. I.e. this design simply won't scale, and if it does, opening thousands of posts manually will be long and slow(cost exponentially more bandwidth for hosting too,as each [+] is an extra connection).

...its worse, it just hides the subtrees, but loads everything collapsed. Its a dumb design fail.
